I’ve you’ve been following these posts from part 1, sorry for starting with directing people to the start again.
If you’ve not been following these posts from part 1…what are you playing at! Go start at the beginning!
At the Rock we believe in adult baptism, mainly because Jesus told us to do it (but that’s a theological conversation for another time.) As we don’t have a building we don’t have a nice warm baptismal pool. We have our baptisms in Loch Lomond. We don’t do nice warm baptismal pools here.
One of the scariest baptisms we’ve ever done is with a frail old lady I think in her 80s. Wynn had been an ardent atheist her whole life. She had a story like Paul’s that this whole Jesus thing was full of untruths.
And then deep in retirement…while tidying flowers in her garden…something she had done many times before…over many decades…she stopped and looked at the flower…in that moment...as she looked at the flower in her garden…the idea that there wasn’t a creator just seemed ridiculous to her.
Something here jarred with her story. A discordant note had been hit and beauty and depth and power and shade and wonder flooded into her story. The Jesus, who the gospel writer describes as being there in creation, was starting to tell a better story in Wynn’s life.
